This book transcends age groups, a book with deeper meanings and themes like struggling with grief and learning to believe in yourself but utilizing a vocabulary and syntax more accessible to younger readers. It’s about magic and unicorns with a splash of science fiction, a genre-bending combination of fantasy and science fiction similar to The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey, but intended for a younger audience.
Overall, I found Blue’s journey to save his tribe and meet his destiny very compelling and the worlds of MarBryn and Unimaise immersive. The gorgeous watercolor illustrations add an engaging visual element to the story and aid the simple writing style in pulling the reader along at a quick pace. The visual introduction to the Metal Horn unicorn tribe, the unicorn diagram, the map, and the pronunciation guide after the story are also very helpful.I love that this book is available in coloring-book format.
While it is intended for an audience of 12-18 years old, the coloring element could entice and calm a reader of any age. Even if we won’t admit it, we all love to color still!I admit that, for a good portion of the book, I thought that the writing style indicated a younger audience, perhaps the younger end of the Middle Grade age group. Still, the twists and action unveiled as the story progresses showed me why the book is recommended for the 12-18 age bracket. I think that even older readers (I’m in my 20s) will be so enthralled by this story and its worlds that they won’t be able to put the book down until they’re finished.
It’s a great book for anyone, from a twelve-year-old to a ninety-year-old, to take a break from the stress and enter a world in which anything is possible, even conquering evil, so long as you believe in yourself and your loved ones.I noticed a few proofreading errors here and there, including missing words and misplaced quotation marks. The errors aren’t noticeable for many pages but, as the story progressed, I saw more and more of them. I must warn that I am a perfectionist with a Bachelor’s in English, so I may just be hyper-aware of the situation. Overall, the errors didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book.I would recommend The Blue Unicorn’s Journey to Osm to any lover of fantasy, especially those who love unicorns and a relaxing—but stimulating—read.
Should Durant choose to pursue MarBryn and/or Unimaise further, she definitely has a reader in me.

A Quest to See Reality

On the surface, Tetrastatum (fourth state) is a SciFi novel about a physicist working on a top-secret teleportation project for DARPA, desperate to discover the truth about the mysterious death of his wife and daughter. He finds himself untethered in time and space on a quest that ultimately leads him to discover that our understanding of reality is a tragic misconception.
The novel is a personal story that is the culmination of my 30 years working in the advanced image processing field of Photonics. In the recent publicized articles in the New York Times and Forbes, leading scientists have suggested that the meaning of quantum mechanics and reality may be connected but currently this connection is inexplicable. In Tetrastatum, I suggest the dual opposite, which is illustrated by example throughout the narrative of the story. Tetrastatum introduces the Unified Equation of Reality (the dualistic image extension of Schrodinger’s probability wave equation) that demonstrates that both quantum mechanics and “reality” itself can be visualized (as images) and modeled.
Quantum mechanics as it is classically understood is simply explaining a natural phenomenon that is a small slice of a much larger picture. Quantum particles such as photons (particles of light) behave in a probabilistic fashion captured mathematically by Schrodinger’s famous wave equation. It is the trillions of photons that are processed by our eyes and brain that make up the images which we see. My dualistic extension of Schrodinger’s equation suggests that macroscopically images move through space and time behaving in a similar probabilistic manner as the tiniest quantum particles of light. Mathematically, images whether external or internal perceptions can be modeled on a sphere. Both of these external and internal images are intertwined to create an individual’s single reality as well as macroscopically form an infinite collective reality. The book makes the argument that it is the internal images (perceptions) that individually shape our lives as well as collectively shape our broader external material existence.
I am an avid reader of Sci-Fi and wanted to create a new type of work that is both educational and entertaining in the genre. Tetrastatum gives the reader a unique understanding of the existing laws of physics and extends them to provoke further thought from novice readers as well as advanced experts in the field. The plot of the story begins when Miral gives birth to a unicorn with neither metal nor magic. Not only that, the baby unicorn is small and weak. This is after Alumna, the oracle, had received a vision that the baby unicorn would grow to be strong. What then, given his current stature, was he going to do if confronted with the worst Magh army?
