Goddess Fish Promotions - Carson of Venus By Matt Betts

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Enter to win a physical copy of the paperback of Carson of Venus: The Edge of All Worlds (continental US only). Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Carson of Venus is back in the first novel of groundbreaking Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe series!

When a mysterious enemy attacks his adopted nation of Korva, Earthman Carson Napier discovers his own arrival on Venus years ago may have unknowingly triggered the strike. The invaders' trail of death and destruction leads Carson and his beloved princess Duare headlong into battle against a seemingly invincible, primordial race. But that is not Carson's only challenge, for an uncanny phenomenon has entangled him with two strange individuals from beyond spacetime. Will Carson be able to solve the mysteries of his past and the enigmatic visitors before the entire planet descends into chaos?

Also includes the bonus novelette "Pellucidar: Dark of the Sun" by Christopher Paul Carey, introducing Victory Harben, the ERB Universe's newest heroine:

The very principle of physics behind the Gridley Wave has mysteriously failed, cutting off all communication between the hollow world of Pellucidar and the outer crust, and now inventor Jason Gridley must seek help from his brilliant young protégé, Victory Harben. Together they recover timeworn records from deep in the ruins of a dead Mahar city, hoping to use knowledge of Pellucidar's former reptilian overlords to jumpstart the Gridley Wave. But when their experiment goes terribly wrong, Jason and Victory suddenly find themselves drawn into the inscrutable machinations of an ancient evil.

THE FIRST UNIVERSE OF ITS KIND

A century before the term "crossover" became a buzzword in popular culture, Edgar Rice Burroughs created the first expansive, fully cohesive literary universe. Coexisting in this vast cosmos was a pantheon of immortal heroes and heroines--Tarzan of the Apes, Jane Clayton, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Carson Napier, and David Innes being only the best known among them. In Burroughs' 80-plus novels, their epic adventures transported them to the strange and exotic worlds of Barsoom, Amtor, Pellucidar, Caspak, and Va-nah, as well as the lost civilizations of Earth and even realms beyond the farthest star. Now the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe expands in an all-new series of canonical novels written by today's talented authors!

Read an Excerpt

“You should not have come here,” Yron interrupted. He looked over my friends and then opened his mouth repeatedly, as if he were straining for air. “You should turn around now and go back home in that strange flying vessel of yours.” He waited, as if he truly expected us to go.

Duare broke the awkward silence. “We are here to ask for help, or at the very least, some information.”

“I have none of that,” Yron said.

“Help or information?” I asked.

“Neither. Both.” The jong appeared flustered by the request, and by our very presence. I wondered why our appearances here had so obviously upset this usually cunning and devious leader. Had I known that it was Yron we were dealing with, I certainly would have thought twice about meeting with him so far down in his own element.

“What are you doing out here?” I asked. Yron and his people lived thousands of miles to the north in the city of Mypos, so what had prompted them to establish such a far-flung outpost? And who had built it? I had been to Mypos and seen firsthand the fish-people’s poor sense of art and architecture. They certainly hadn’t constructed this outpost on their own.

Before Yron could respond, Ero Shan stepped forward and demanded to hear anything that Yron knew about Nalte and the strange soldiers who had taken her. Duare interjected and described the creatures we had encountered, their craft, and how they had absconded with our companion.

Yron looked anxious, if his rapidly flapping gill slits meant anything, and said, “It sounds like you’ve run afoul of the Linneauns.”

Teen Unicorn Book Feature - The Chronicles of Narnia and Philosophy by Gregory Bassham

Sybrina's Unicorn Book Pick

For Teen, YA and Older Readers

 Today's Unicorn Book Feature is

The Chronicles of Narnia

And Philosophy

 By Gregory Bassham

The Chronicles of Narnia series has entertained millions of readers, both children and adults, since the appearance of the first book in 1950. Here, scholars turn the lens of philosophy on these timeless tales. Engagingly written for a lay audience, these essays consider a wealth of topics centered on the ethical, spiritual, mythic, and moral resonances in the adventures of Aslan, the Pevensie children, and the rest of the colorful cast. Do the spectacular events in Narnia give readers a simplistic view of human choice and decision making? Does Aslan offer a solution to the problem of evil? What does the character of Susan tell readers about Lewis’s view of gender? How does Lewis address the Nietzschean “master morality” embraced by most of the villains of the Chronicles? With these and a wide range of other questions, this provocative book takes a fresh view of the world of Narnia and expands readers’ experience of it.

Journey To Osm - The Blue Unicorn's Tale

 Reader Review

Reviewed By K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite

Journey to Osm: The Blue Unicorn’s Tale is a work of high fantasy fiction penned by author Sybrina Durant. Written for all ages, the action takes place in MarBryn, a world of unicorns where the creatures live in a sentient society. Their numbers are dwindling and the species, known as Metal Horns, are slowly dying out, which means their magic is dying with them. When their Oracle predicts that the ill-fated unicorns might find their salvation in a newborn foal, everyone’s eyes are on Blue from the moment he’s born. Unfortunately, Blue is born without metal, but the pressure of being such a disappointment drives him to succeed in other ways, and he might just turn out to be the saviour his clan is looking for after all.

The first thing that I absolutely loved about this tale was the prophecy-gone-wrong concept at its very beginning. Throughout the book, author Sybrina Durant subverts the norms of this kind of high fantasy, breaking many tropes, but then bringing in others to surprise you at just the right moment. The result is an intriguing plot line and a tale of true grit and determination as Blue attempts to live up to expectations, despite not being born with the powers he was claimed to have. There were moments where I genuinely forgot that I was reading about unicorns, because the emotional story lines of the characters were strong and relatable throughout. I believe that many fantasy fans will enjoy Journey to Osm: The Blue Unicorn’s Tale.

Lone Star Book Blog Tours - Edison Jones and the Anti-Grav Elevator by Michael Scott Clifton

EDISON JONES AND THE ANTI-GRAV ELEVATOR
by
MICHAEL SCOTT CLIFTON
Genre: MG-YA / Action & Adventure / Men's & Boys'
Publisher: Book Liftoff
Publication Date: February 11, 2020
Number of Pages: 282 pages

SCROLL DOWN FOR THE GIVEAWAY!

Twelve-year-old Edison Jones is a prodigy with a passion for technology and inventions. Paralyzed from the waist down since the age of five, he hasn’t let his disability slow him down. Then his world changes overnight when his grandfather, a billionaire tech company owner, decides to enroll him in a public school. Algorithms, quantum physics, and digital engineering are easy. Finding his way in the bewildering world of boys and girls his own age is quite another thing . . . the biggest challenge of his life.

What an inspirational book!  I absolutely love the clear and positive message, throughout,  that one is only truly handicapped by their intelligence and imagination.  Our hero, young Edison Jones, doesn’t let the fact that he’s a paraplegic, from the waist down, stop him in his quest to make the world a better place. Despite becoming an orphan at the tender age of five, Edison has experienced just about everything the world has to offer except for one thing – the friendship of his peers.  You see, he has never been to public school but thanks to his loving grandfather’s insistence that he enroll for his own good, the young hermit’s life changes in ways that the freshest of all freshmen could have never imagined.

Luckily, Edison Jones learns early, from his junior high school contacts, not to explain everything as if he were speaking with an engineer. Even at my grandmotherly age, I could relate when his new friend, Hondo said “I guess I’m going to have Alexa translate for me when we have these talks. Remember, I’m a kid! Not one of your grandfather’s engineers.” That absolutely genius move on the part of the author Michael Scott Clifton, of explaining engineering and science in simple, yet exciting terms that anyone can understand and even aspire to, makes me imagine that most any teen can and will get excited about the concepts this book presents.

I have to say that I particularly loved the idea of using an anti-grav elevator to transport large payloads into space...to the space station and beyond.  What a concept!  Magnetic rings that push against each other until the module sitting atop them all reaches the exosphere (which I learned from reading this book -  happens to be the 5th  and final layer of the earth’s atmosphere).  This book has many of my favorite elements of science fiction novels but it turned out to be even better than sci-fi because it falls more into the realm of what I'll just have to call "super science".

Engineers and Scientists – the world needs more of them and this book encourages me to believe we will have them - along with a bright and clean energy future. Now, that’s what I call inspirational.
