Book Reviews for the Blue Unicorn's Journey To Osm by Nicole L

Book Reviews for The Blue Unicorn's Journey To Osm

By Nicole S. Lopez on May 20, 2018

This book is illustrated throughout and is an easy read. Perfect for juvenile readers looking for a bit of adventure. I enjoyed the story along with the stunning and colourful illustrations. For me it was a super fast read, but I thought it was well written and easy to understand. Has a bit of adventure where you get to root for the underdog! (The blue unicorn throughout the beginning of the story.). I recommend this book for younger readers; older one might consider this to be boring.

Goddess Fish Promotions - Sophie Washington: Secret Santa by Tonya Duncan Ellis

Christmas is three weeks away and a mysterious "Santa" has been mailing presents to sixth grader Sophie Washington. Her friends guess that the secret Kris Kringle could be either Nathan Jones or Toby Johnson, two boys in Sophie's class who have liked her in the past, but she's not sure. Sophie uncovers clues to find her secret Santa and the final reveal is bigger than any package she's opened on Christmas morning. It's a holiday surprise she'll never forget!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE: This book will be on sale for only $0.99 during the tour.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg!”

“Be quiet, Cole!” I put my hands over my ears to muffle my brother’s out-of-tune singing and focus back on my laptop to finish my English essay. It’s less than three weeks until winter break and my teachers have been piling on the assignments to make sure we get our end of semester grades in.

There sure is a big change between fifth and sixth grade, workwise, at Xavier Academy, the private school my brother and I go to. Between all the essays and projects and studying for final exams, I feel I can barely take time to pat my dog, Bertram, when I get home; whereas, my eight-year-old brother Cole acts like he’s already on vacation.

Since we got home from school an hour ago, he’s been living it up, shooting hoops in the driveway, eating a snack and now playing on the handheld video game player that my mother would make him put up if she were downstairs with us. I ought to tell on him now…

Ding Dong!

The doorbell interrupts my thoughts.

“Can you get it, Sophie?” Mom yells from upstairs. “I’m putting some clothes in the closet.”

I would ask her why she wants me to answer the door, and not Cole, but I already know the answer: “Because you’re the oldest.”

Of course, that logic doesn’t hold when it comes to who gets the first dessert or who doesn’t have to do the dishes at night. As the baby of the family and favored child, my little brother has got it made.

I trudge to the front door in time to see the mail carrier heading back to his truck. He’s left a medium-sized box on the porch. Wonder what it is?

My mother sometimes has holiday packages delivered to the house, but Cole and I haven’t made our Christmas lists yet, so I doubt it’s anything for us. I open the door, pick the package up, and check out the label. It’s got my name on it in bright, red ink, “Sophie Washington.”

Who could this be from?

I never get any mail, except for birthday gifts my Granny Washington sends to our house in Houston from Corpus Christi when she can’t be here, and I don’t remember my parents ordering anything for us online. Granny is driving up to see us tomorrow, so  I doubt she would mail presents here when she could just bring them with her.

“Mom, I got a package!” I call out.

“What is it?” Cole bounds from the family room to stare at the box as I set it on the kitchen counter.

“Back off, Cole, it’s mine,” I move him to the side with my hip and take a closer look at the delivery. The box is wrapped in brown paper, and there is no return address. It looks difficult to open with my fingers, so I pull a butter knife out of a drawer in the kitchen and slit through the tape on the side. A sweet, sugary scent fills the air.

“Cool!” exclaims Cole in appreciation as the brown wrapping slides off to reveal a box filled with packages of licorice, gummy bears, gum, and red and green M&Ms. I notice a typed note underneath.

Dear Sophie,
Hope your day is super sweet!
Your Secret Santa

"Sofie Washington - Secret Santa" is a fun, easy read with lots of cool, single line black and white illustrations which are great for coloring.  And I, especially love that idea.

Throughout the book, author and artist, Tonya Duncan slips in amazing little insights about what goes on in the minds of young boys and girls. The story is so filled with the details of every day life that the reader feels just like they are right there with Sofie while she is building a gingerbread house with Grandma or learning to ice skate for the first time with her best friends.

In fact, there are so many holiday season activities in this book that you will wish you were part of the middle school crowd at Sofie's school, Xavier Academy.

I've got to tell you, I really thought I knew who the secret santa was as I delved into this book but boy was I surprised to learn who it turned out to be. It actually brought tears to my eyes.

This is a touching story with a focus on bullying and the importance of family and friends.  It is a great read.  I wish I had had a friend like Sofie when I was growing up.

Book Reviews for The Blue Unicorn's Journey To Osm

A fun fantasy

*I received a copy from the RABT Book Tours for review on my blog. This did not affect my review. This review is voluntary.*

Such a fun story. Light-hearted and charming. The artwork is beautiful, and the characters quickly become the reader's friends, someone young readers can cheer for and look forward to reading about.

The story has a timeless feel to it, and is great for all ages.

Book Reviews for the Blue Unicorn's Journey To Osm by Clare O

Book Reviews for The Blue Unicorn's Journey To Osm

Every author has her own take on unicorns, and these are brightly coloured horselike beings but with cloven hoofs (that means they are not horses, although they could have evolved from a common ancestor) and with a single horn, made of a metal. The book has a format of two pages of text followed by a two-page illustration of the scene, so any age can enjoy the story.

This is actually an 'ugly duckling' fable and I must admit to being disappointed when the blue unicorn with no metal horn turned into something shinier and stronger, instead of making best use of his innate talents and wit.

The adventure starts gently and becomes quite scary and involved, with many names, magical talents, villains and backstories. I thought there was too much poured in to a cup for young kids, who would not be able to keep track and would wonder why the story about the sorceror suddenly became one about space flight. I also, while admiring the artistry and vision of the illustrations, did find the parade of bright colours became wearying to the eye, like something psychedelic.

I found it incredible that the last few unicorns would continue to braid their manes, feast, and wear fruit as decoration when the race had been slaughtered wholesale and they were hunted daily. Would they not be organising to do something about it or even have patrols for safety? Just possibly the author intends this as an allegory to show how some humans are ignoring the biodiversity loss in progress.

I can see the work that has gone into the book and I am sure kids will find it fascinating and want to  read the story. Some good vocabulary is introduced.  I downloaded an e-ARC from Instafreebie. This is an unbiased review.

Unicorn Book Feature

Black Unicorn

By Tanith Lee

Nobody knew where it had come from, or what it wanted. Not even Jaive, the sorceress, could fathom the mystery of the fabled beast. But Tanaquil, Jaive's completely unmagical daughter, understood it at once. She knew why the unicorn was there: It had come for her. It needed her. Tanaquil was amazed because she was the girl with no talent for magic. She could only fiddle with broken bits of machinery and make them work again. What could she do for a unicorn?

Silver Dagger Book Tours and Giveaways - The Black Trillium by Simon McNeil

The
Black Trillium
by
Simon McNeil

Genre:
Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy

Confederation
rules in Trana—so says the king.

But
Fredericton is a long way from the shores of Lake Ontario, and
schemes for power will bring together three extraordinary young
warriors.

Savannah
A
desert girl who came to Trana looking for refuge but has never found
a home

Kieran
A
privileged city boy dreaming of rebellion and hardened by
cruelty

Kyle
The
disgraced heir to the throne desperate to win back his place in his
father's heart

Sworn
enemies or reluctant allies, they all have one thing in common: an
incomplete half of the legendary fighting skill known as the
Triumvirate sword art. They fight for glory, for power, for the
monsters lurking beneath the streets, and for the mysterious society
moving in the shadows of Trana—the Black Trillium.

Simon McNeil is the
author of The Black Trillium, a story of revolution and martial arts
set in the ruins of Toronto. This novel is published by Brain
Lag Publishing
.
He is an online
marketing communications specialist with a major educational
institution when not wandering the world looking for trouble. He is a
life-long martial artist, has published several articles in Kung Fu
Magazine and he’s probably a little bit too fond of kung fu movies.
He lives in Toronto,
Canada with his wife who has happily laid out rules to prevent the
sword-through-glass-lampshade incident from ever happening again. The
Black Trillium is his first novel.

Later that day I was tending the fire in the kitchen hearth. Uncle Stephen came back in from his deck. His lips were almost blue from the cold but whatever he’d been speaking to his friend about had been clearly more important than his comfort.

“Kieran, I’ve spoken to Jean. He told me what happened, with Sawchuk.”

“You aren’t mad, are you?”

“No, I understand.”

“Well good, because I didn’t mean to attract his attention, it’s just…”

“He suspects me. And not entirely without reason; surely you have suspected.”

I gave my uncle a skeptical look.

“You know the stories about the fall of Quebec and the freedom fighters who opposed MacMillan’s father.”

“The Black Trillium,” I said.

“And I’m sure you have heard that some of them survived. Well…” He paused and he looked at me steadily. “Jean and I both fight for the Black Trillium. We have since we were young. In Jean’s case he was at the fall of Quebec.”

The fall of Quebec. It was one of those moments of infamy you heard about in hushed rumour, almost legend already, though not yet in the distant past. That Mr. Chamblais might have actually been there was shocking. I sat still for a moment, trying to control my surprise and awe before I spoke.
“And now something has happened.”

“In Broken Tower. The lordling there killed a Confederation minister as an offering to us, seeking allegiance. We turned him down. We weren’t ready to free Trana and he’s forced our hand. Things are going to be very hard in the next year. War is coming to Trana. So you have a choice to make.”

“A choice…” I could hardly believe what he was telling me. It made sense. My uncle’s strange friends, his opposition to Confederation, Sawchuk’s suspicions, all these things fit the pattern of a rebel in hiding.

“Yes, you can fight with us. If you do you will have to do… terrible things. War is always terrible. But you can. Or Jean can bring you to safety somewhere nearby.”

“What about you?”

“I have to stay here. It’s my home. I’ll fight to defend it.”

“So will I,” I said.

“Be careful Kieran, I never wanted to draw you into a war.”

“No. But if I start running now, when will I stop?”

“If you are sure,” he said.

And I was.

“Yes,” I said, and I looked up at uncle Stephen burning with fierce pride.

“So why were you fighting with Argus Sawchuk?”

“I was talking with Teddy Li about the situation, you know, down in Broken Tower and he came around, accused me of treason.”

“The situation is fragile, we must be careful not to alert the wrong people clashing with lumps like Sawchuk.”

The stranger slipped into the room then and said, “The situation is beyond fragile. It is devolving and there will be war soon.”

Uncle Stephen seemed to deflate a little, his shoulders sagging. He took a deep breath. “I know that, Jean. But I’d prefer it didn’t start on my doorstep.”

“The truth is that we must deal with Sawchuk.”

I had a fantasy of drumming the bully out of Kensington, tarring him and feathering him, anything to see him gone.

“Let’s go now!”

“You’ll stay put today.” Uncle Stephen sounded firm.

“But…”

“No, your uncle is right. Sawchuk won’t readily forget you were the reason he was beaten today. He’ll be on the lookout for you as soon as he recovers and the chances are good he won’t be alone. You stay put, for today. Tomorrow we will see to your education.”

“Yes, sir,” I said. “I understand.” I thought calling him sir would be appropriately respectful, but he just chuckled at me.

“Mr. Chamblais will suffice,” he said.

“If you don’t mind me asking, Mr. Chamblais, what do you mean you’ll see to my education? I already know my numbers and letters.”

“There is much a rebel must know beyond reading and writing. I don’t suppose you know how to handle a sword.”

I’d never thought of it that way. I’d played at swords with my friends when I was a kid but Kensington was a peaceful place. I hadn’t ever learned to fight.

“But first you must be initiated.”

“Initiated,” I said. “Some sort of ceremony?”

“Something like that.”

The rest of the day passed slowly. I stayed inside while uncle Stephen and Mr. Chamblais “dealt with the Sawchuk problem” and the weather was miserable in any case. I felt almost resentful, like I wasn’t getting to join a romantic brotherhood of freedom fighters, but was instead being made a prisoner in my own home by a strange raggedy man.

I went to sleep reluctantly, my head buzzing with thoughts of heroism and rebellion, excited and terrified about what lay before me.
